The Flip Squad has busted onto the San Francisco Jam scene with a distinct sound that resonates the euphonic tones of such groups as The Grateful Dead and Phish, while still firmly establishing their singularity within the realm of contemporary jam rock. Boasting a substantial catalog of original material, the band brings the audience through the ether and into unexplored territory of the Jam Cosmos. Their debut album, Protholuscious, brings aspects of funk, classic rock, bluegrass, and jazz infused into tightly woven jams that captivate you from start to finish–leaving you with an unquenchable thirst for more. Aside from incendiary jams, a prominent energy and stage presence, The Flip Squad also takes their audiences on a lyrical odyssey through stories rich and colorful in meaning and perpetuity. If one had the chance to see the power trio live they should surely take it, as The Flip Squad is one of the most interesting and promising up and coming jam bands currently in the San Francisco jam rock scene.

Island Song

The Flip Squad rocked the house on Black Friday at The Hotel Utah. Their explosive set began with some fast jammy songs before settling down for a country blues segment including This Old Light and Nick The Tick. Guitarman Jackson Haddad gave a shout-out to his old pal Scarass for whom Nick The Tick was written.
By now, The Flip Squad’s audience knows to expect a vartiety of sounds and styles; and they were not dissapointed. Jazzy Jack made its appearance following a rocking Silent Green. The two part moster ballad of The Pharaoh/Deaf, Dumb & Blind poured forth with creamy tone like butter-cream melting off a wedding cake. Jackson and Andy Bukstein gave the lyrical benediction to a sea of awe inspired faces as they plunged out of The Pharaoh’s mad flight into the land of the Deaf, Dumb & Blind.
The Flip Squad introduced a new cover song at the show: Level, by The Raconteurs. Many people in the crowd knew the song and were excited to see a band already covering it.
Island Song, the longest in The Flip Squad’s catalog, ended the night and brought down the house with the cheers and applaud of a very satisfied Hotel Utah crowd.

The Flip Squad began their set Saturday night with Something Cool–a classic opener: the song starts out with a calm, melodic jam and abruptly slams into a fast, rocking groove. Right away the packed room began to sway to the music. Next, This Old Light brought a country twang to the room, a classy change-of-pace-song indicative of The Flip Squad. Then the peaceful beginning of Easy Feeling carried the audience off into a dream (the song being the dreamy tale of a lone traveler in the wilderness). The Squad then played Green Boat, a fan favorite, with singer Jackson Haddad crooning his sometimes incomprehensible lyrics as he gyrated his hips to the beat. By the Side of The Lake came next and turned up the pace of the show. Schism followed, continuing the fast pace, periodically delving into some dark and moody jams. The Pharaoh/Deaf, Dumb & Blind, always a treat to see, showed just how two songs can flow seamlessly together. Bassist Andy Bukstein experienced a brief “technical difficulty” as his effects pedals became unplugged. But the group was able to recover and soon they were back on track. Silent Green came next, immediately followed by the quick, instrumental Jazzy Jack. By then the band realized they were almost out of time, so they decided to end the night with Island Song. The new arrangement of this long and creative piece features an outro that weaves together several types of jams and melodies. All in all, it was a very thrilling ending to a great show.

The Flip Squad took the stage at 10:30pm for one thirty minute set, part of a 6 band bill on Friday September 29th. They shared the stage with two metal bands, two punk bands, and the rocking funk group Dynamic. The Squad played very well, despite having to truncate most of their jams because of the time restraint. Green Boat opened their short set, a first for Squad fans. They tore through the fast jams of By The Side of The Lake and Silent Green with fury, ending the night on a high note.
The Flip Squad had delivered a swarthy sound seldom heard to Bay area music lovers.

“I can’t wait to see The Flip Squad again,” said a new fan, “I can’t believe I’ve never heard of them before.”

After the show Toby, Jackson, and Andy waited outside the venue chatting with the lead singer for Dymanic.
“It was fun, but we need to be up there for longer,” said lead guitarman Jackson Haddad. “We have so many good songs, it’s hard to pick the ‘best’ ones to fit in thirty minutes,” added bassist Andy Bukstein.

After a brief soundcheck, The Flip Squad took the stage on what would be their first show of their career. They opened with Silent Green, a fast rocking blues ballad about a young southerner who is running from his demons: booze, women, and the law. Jackson tore into his first solo with the fury of a child opening presents on Christmas. At this point, the audience quieted down to enjoy the music. Jazzy Jack, an instrumental piece, followed showcasing the band’s versatility. Jazzy Jack segued into One Way Station, a ten-minute song about a man dealing with a prior arrest for drunk driving. Next was The Pharaoh, one of The Flip Squad’s best songs, a story about betrayal and power. The jam was very spacey and the band took it to a new level as usual. They made a seamless transition into Deaf Dumb & Blind, the sister song to The Pharaoh which continues the saga between the Pharaoh and his nemesis The Watchman. The band, upon request, played Green Boat to a crowd of delighted fans. Then they played a Phish cover song, Llama, bringing the crowd into some recognizable territory before slamming into a ripping By The Side of The Lake, one of their most whimsical and eerie songs.

At the end of their 45 minute set, Blake’s was on its feet cheering for The Flip Squad. “The show came together really well,” said guitarist Andy Bukstein later to an adoring fan. Toby chimed in as well, “Yeah, I really thought we hit all the changes.” Jackson was unavailable for comment as he was too busy thanking every one for coming to the show and giving their support.
